Injection administration is a common procedure that every nurse would be performing as a part of daily clinical routine. This course helps to review the procedure of medication administration via intramuscular, subcutaneous and intradermal route and acquires the skills.

The objective of this course is to:

  • Understand the concepts and principles related to injection administration
  • Demonstrate the techniques of intramuscular injection administration
  • Demonstrate the techniques of subcutaneous injection administration
  • Demonstrate the techniques of intradermal injection administration

Curriculum

    Details of the Course
    1. Introduction of the course

      The aim of this module is to facilitate the safe administration of injections via intramuscular, intradermal and subcutaneous route.

      The module deals with the following topics:

    Injection - Overview
    1. Injection is the method of administering medications through parenteral route. Medications given by parenteral route are absorbed more rapidly and completely than medications given by other routes.

      This module is divided into two parts:

      Injection administration Overview (Part-1):

      The first part of this module deals with the various methods of administering drugs/medications via intramuscular, intradermal and subcutaneous route, techniques in administering injections, principles of drug administration, equipments needed for injection administration and angle of insertion for various routes.  

      Injection administration Overview (Part-2):

      The second part of this module deals with the rights of medication administration, needle disposal and prevention of needle stick injury.

    Intramuscular injection
    1. Medicines when injected into the muscles it is called intramuscular injection. This part of the video demonstrates the concepts related to intramuscular injection including purpose, indication, contraindications, site, various needle and syringe sizes, method of administering intramuscular injection.

      This module is divided into two parts:

      Intramuscular Injection (Part-1):

      The first part of this module deals with the basics on intramuscular injection, indication, purpose, contraindication, method of administration, routes of administration and patient education.

      Intramuscular Injection (Part-2):

      The second part of this module demonstrates the method of administering intramuscular medication via Z-track method and Vastus Lateralis route, post procedural care, needle disposal and complications related with intramuscular injection administration.

    Subcutaneous injection
    1. This video demonstrates the concepts related to subcutaneous injection administration. It includes the purpose, indication, contraindications, site, various needle and syringe sizes, and method of administering subcutaneous injection.
    Intradermal injection
    1. This video demonstrates the concepts related to intradermal injection administration. It includes the purpose, indication, contraindications, site, pre procedural assessment (skin testing), specific needle and syringe for intradermal injection and the method of administering intradermal injection.
