The objectives of this module are to:

    Details of the Course
    1. Introduction of the course

      Suctioning is a technique to clear airway passage off secretions that a patient is otherwise unable to cough out.

      Nurses have a great responsibility regarding airway management of a patient, also they need to possess good clinical skill and knowledge to perform this procedure and make patient comfortable.

      The module is divided into three parts:


    Part A- Introduction to Suctioning
    1. This part of the module explains the theoretical and practical skill required in performing suctioning for a hospitalised sick client. It also describes the indications, contraindications, suction pressure, sizes of catheter, important points to be remembered while performing suctioning and articles required.


    Part B-Oropharyngeal and Nasopharyngeal Suctioning
    1. This part of the module describes about Oropharyngeal and Nasopharyngeal Suctioning. It deals in detail the steps of procedure to be followed in performing Oropharyngeal and Nasopharyngeal Suctioning including measuring the appropriate size of catheter to be used and the depth of catheter insertion.


    Part C- Tracheostomy Suctioning
    1. This part of the module describes about Tracheostomy Suctioning. It deals in detail the steps of procedure to be followed in performing Tracheostomy Suctioning including measuring the appropriate size of catheter to be used, depth of catheter insertion, pre oxygenation and post procedural care of patient.
