This module on Safe patient handling and mobility describes how a healthcare worker can safely ambulate or transfer the patients.

The objective of this course is to:

  • Understand the concepts related to safe handling of patient
  • Demonstrate the procedure of safe transferring of a patient
  • Demonstrate the procedure of ambulation of patient with various aids

    Details of the Course
    1. Introduction of the course

      Safe handling of patient is important so as to prevent any accidental falls or injury to the patients as well as to protect the healthcare worker from undue strain to the body.

      The module deals with the following topics:


    Transferring patient from bed to wheelchair
    1. Many patients have conditions which impair their mobility and require assistance to do so. Transferring patient from bed to wheel chair is without injury is an important nursing responsibility.

      In this part of the module we would demonstrate the steps of transferring a patient from bed to wheelchair and important points to be kept in mind while transferring.


    Transferring patient from bed to stretcher
    1. When a patient needs assistance for shifting him from his room or for any diagnostic procedure and has limited mobility, a stretcher may be used.

      In this part of the video we would demonstrate the steps of transferring a patient from bed to stretcher.


    Helping patient to sit upon bed
    1. Immobilised, bed ridden or sick clients may require assistance to sit up in bed. 

      In this part of the video we would demonstrate the method of assisting a patient to sit up in bed before a transfer, having feed or for positional change.


    Ambulation with the help of walker
    1. This video demonstrates how a nurse can assist the patient to walk with the help of a walker.  It is used for those patients who are not able to walk after surgery or illness, enabling the patient to move with the help of assistive devices.
